Monitoring Climate Impacts on Annual Forage Production across U.S. Semi-Arid Grasslands

چکیده

The ecosystem performance approach, used in a previously published case study focusing on the Nebraska Sandhills, proved to minimize impacts of non-climatic factors (e.g., overgrazing, fire, pests) remotely-sensed signal seasonal vegetation greenness resulting better attribution its changes climate variability. current validates applicability this approach for assessment and interannual forage production western United States semi-arid grasslands. Using piecewise regression tree model, we developed Expected Ecosystem Performance (EEP), proxy annual that reflects climatic influences while minimizing management disturbances. EEP model establishes relations between climate, site-specific growth potential, long-term variability capture growing season measured via time-integrated Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) observed using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). 19 years were converted expected biomass (EB, kg ha−1 year−1) newly-developed relation with Soil Survey Geographic Database range data (R2 = 0.7). Results compared ground-observed datasets collected by U.S. Department Agriculture University Nebraska-Lincoln 0.67). This illustrated is transferable other arid grasslands can be creating timely, post-season assessments. When combined predictions, it provide within-season estimates serve as basis more informed adaptive decision making livestock producers land managers.

Forage yield and quality of barley-annual medic intercrops in semi-arid environments

On-farm production of protein is limited in most dairy farm operations in arid and semi-arid environments. Cereal-legume intercropping could be a viable option to obtain forage with higher protein content. A two-year experiment was conducted during 2009 and 2010 growing seasons in a loamy soil to determine whether intercropping pattern of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and annual medic (Medica...

Impacts of climate change on extreme precipitation events in arid (Bandar Abbas) and semi-arid (Shahrekord) stations in Iran

The aim of this paper is to project extreme precipitation events in an arid and a semiarid station. In order to project climate change based on general circulation models (GCMs), we have applied LARS-WG[1] downscaling tool. This stochastic weather generator down-scaled the climate of two synoptic stations using HADCM3 model and A2 emission scenario for 2040. We extracted extreme precipitation e...

Shrub encroachment can reverse desertification in semi-arid Mediterranean grasslands.

The worldwide phenomenon of shrub encroachment in grass-dominated dryland ecosystems is commonly associated with desertification. Studies of the purported desertification effects associated with shrub encroachment are often restricted to relatively few study areas, and document a narrow range of possible impacts upon biota and ecosystem processes. We conducted a study in degraded Mediterranean ...

Impacts of grazing intensity on denitrification and N2O production in a semi-arid grassland ecosystem

N2O production from denitrification in soils contributes to the enhanced greenhouse effect and the destruction of the stratospheric ozone. Ungulate grazing affects denitrification and the production of N2O. The short-term effect of grazing on denitrification and N2O production has been examined in several grassland ecosystems. However, the effects of long-term grazing have rarely been studied. ...
